Paint Pouring on Glass, Canvas and Other Items
with Suzie O'Clair
Paint pouring can be done on a myriad of different items. Have you seen those fancy looking multi-colored vases and bowls in the stores and thought “how pretty and interesting”? What about those paintings that look like flowing trails of flower blossoms? Do you have any old Christmas ornaments that just don’t seem to fit on your tree anymore? How about old terra cotta pots you’d like to reuse?
This class will teach you how you can create your own fancy glassware, paintings, Christmas tree ornaments and other things through the art of paint pouring whether using new items to start or if you want to breathe new life into ones you’d like to repurpose. You don’t need to be an artist because the poured paint will do it for you. It’s easy and fun and you’ll be able to say “Wow - I did that!”
Instructor: Suzie O’Clair has been very interested in all kinds of artistic venues: paint pouring/painting on glass, weaving, enameling, sandblasting, fabric arts and working with wood. She has taught herself how to paint pour creating Christmas ornaments for gifts using both new and old ones and updated vases and bowls through the art of painting on glass.
Class Information: This is an in-person only class - held in the Undercroft of St. Aidan's Church (next door to UMM).
Supplies required for this class:
Acrylic enamel paint, rubbing alcohol, modge podge – glossy, mixing cups, glass/plastic Christmas tree ornaments, glass vases/bowls, small canvases, sheet pans, paintbrushes, hairdryer (students can bring their own items from home to repurpose – vases, bowls, glasses, ornaments for the Christmas tree)

“What is Hospice?” Down East Hospice Volunteers - Who are they? What do they do?
with Barbara Barnett
On February 18, 2023, former President Jimmy Carter entered home hospice care in Plains, Georgia, at 98 years old. Now at 99, he remains the longest-living American president. Experts on end-of-life care hope his endurance drives awareness and hope for others in the same boat. So exactly what is Hospice?
Here’s your special opportunity to hear from and ask questions of Barbara Barnett, the Executive Director of Volunteer Services for Down East Hospice Volunteers (DEHV). Did you know that DEHV has been here for our community since 1981! Were you aware that DEHV is the only volunteer hospice organization in Washington County?
Will you need to use these wonderful services someday? Perhaps after hearing her stories, you might want to help others. As part of our series on “aging with dignity,” we felt it was important to offer this informative presentation on what Hospice is and what it is not. Why not join Barbara as she provides us with an interesting background on the history of hospice care and how and when it came to the U.S.A.
She will tell you the amazing story about how DEHV began, how hospice came to the United States and came here to the communities of our beloved Washington County where it is now an integral part of end-of-life. Learn more about hospice as Barbara discusses what services a hospice volunteer can and cannot provide the people they are dedicated to serve. This service is free of charge to everyone. Think about the importance of keeping those we care about at home or at least closer to home when they face a serve illness and needed support. Barbara will share personal stories of her experiences during her 30+ years providing volunteer hospice care. She will tell us how she came to make this decision to help others by getting involved in this increasingly needed service to others. Stories that will tug at your heart and others that will make you chuckle.
What a hospice volunteer provides is not a mystery and it’s not difficult. Keep someone company, go food shopping, walk a dog, take someone for an appointment, help plan a garden, stack firewood, sit and watch their favorite TV shows, play cards. It’s giving a few hours a week, being a good listener and making someone feel less alone and more cared for while providing respite for caregivers.
Instructor: Barbara Barnett has been involved with DEHV for over 30 years, starting out as a volunteer and eventually taking on the job of Executive Director of Volunteer Services. She trains new hospice volunteers twice a year and works closely with the local Medicare Hospice agency in Washington County. Barbara networks with other volunteer hospices in Maine, the Maine Hospice Council and many support organizations for end-of-life care. She has personally experienced end-of-life care for family members and many friends in different settings. She meets every hospice client and their care givers when admitting someone into their free volunteer hospice services.
Prior to taking on the position with Down East Hospice Volunteers, Barbara was a medical/technical illustrator (her previous life!). She has lived in Washington County, ME, for 42 years and can’t spend enough time on the water.

What is Philosophy?
with Dr. John Patrick Cleary
Philosophy is the study and analysis of ideas, arguments and propositions that form the basis of knowledge claims in the arts and sciences. It often serves as a tool in guiding us through the complexities of life, in addition to understanding how ideas influence the ways in which we understand our experiences in the world. As citizens turn increasingly to electronic sources of learning and communication, it becomes even more essential that they learn to critically evaluate the flow of information to which they are continually exposed. In this regard, Philosophy enables one to objectively discern the effect that concepts have on our development of values and perspectives.
In this one-session presentation, Dr. John Patrick Cleary will take us on a journey to discover how the different branches (subjects of study) of Philosophy can assist us in interpreting reality and truth and, in turn, how questions that originate from reflective/contemplative thinking can help us in furthering our self-knowledge.
Instructor: Dr. John Patrick Cleary has taught students of all backgrounds, ages and abilities. He began his career teaching Philosophy to High School students, (17 years) and then moved to teaching University and Community College students in New Jersey for another 12 years. He received his doctoral degree in Pedagogy and Philosophy from The Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children at Montclair State University. He is currently adjunct Professor of Philosophy at Beal University.
